Job Description & Requirements - Specialty: Surgical Technologist - Discipline: Allied Health Professional - Start Date: 01/12/2026 - Duration: Ongoing - 40 hours per week - Shift: 8 hours, days - Employment Type: Staff Job Description: Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) Position Title: Certified Surgical Technologist Department: Operating Room / Surgical Services Reports To: Surgical Services Manager / Charge Nurse FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Position Summary The Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) is a vital member of the surgical team responsible for ensuring a safe, efficient, and sterile environment during operative procedures. The CST assists surgeons, RNs, and anesthesia providers by preparing operating rooms, organizing instruments and supplies, maintaining aseptic technique, and anticipating the needs of the surgical team to promote optimal patient outcomes. Key ResponsibilitiesPreoperative Duties - Prepare operating rooms according to the type of procedure. - Gather, inspect, and organize instruments, equipment, and sterile supplies. - Perform surgical counts with the circulating RN, ensuring accountability for instruments, sponges, and sharps. - Ensure the integrity of sterilization and proper functioning of equipment. - Assist with patient positioning, skin prep, and draping as needed. Intraoperative Duties - Maintain strict aseptic technique and sterile field integrity at all times. - Anticipate the surgeon’s needs by passing instruments and supplies promptly and efficiently. - Operate and troubleshoot surgical equipment (e.g., suction devices, electrocautery). - Handle tissue specimens per established protocols. - Monitor inventory on the sterile field and communicate needs proactively. Postoperative Duties - Participate in final surgical counts with the circulating nurse. - Assist with dressing applications and securing lines/tubing. - Clean, decontaminate, and reassemble instruments and equipment. - Restock and prepare rooms for subsequent procedures. - Document instrument issues, case notes, or supply usage as required. QualificationsRequired - High school diploma or GED. - Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program. - Current certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) through NBSTSA. - Current BLS certification (AHA or equivalent). Preferred - 1–2 years of experience in an operating room or surgical services setting. - Experience in specialty areas (orthopedics, cardiovascular, neurosurgery, OB/GYN, etc.). Knowledge, Skills & Abilities - Strong understanding of sterile technique, surgical instrumentation, and OR workflow. - Excellent communication and teamwork skills. - Ability to anticipate surgeon needs and respond quickly under pressure. - Attention to detail and commitment to patient safety. - Ability to stand for extended periods and lift/move equipment as required.
